perfect backpack

I love this backpack. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to find a nice backpack? Maybe leather or maybe woven, or a combination of the two. I've been searching vintage ones online, but with no luck so far.

  5. Hi Carly! I never comment on your blog but I do have it in my reader and it's a favourite.

I recently had the privilege of visiting Germany for an academic event and they were all about the 'rucksack', but not in a fashionable sort of way that we would be here. More in a 'there's no such thing as Walmart and lousy mass produced garbage here and we have things to carry so we'll just use whatever we've always used' kinda way. Things that would trickle down and end up being very chic and out of the ordinary here in Toronto (see: Fjallraven).

After all that I don't really have any good local suggestions for you sorry! I have an OK Urban Outfitters canvas messenger bag, a vintage leather briefcase with no strap, and one of those 'World Famous' backpacks which is useful for when I'm on my bike (and that have been appearing at the Drake General Store?!). Good luck with your search!

  6. Larger Army Surplus Stores are always a good place to look for backpacks

  7. Hi Geoff! Nice to hear from you! I'll take a look at the DrakeGS next time I'm downtown. I want mine for on my bike too. I have a basket, but sometimes I need to carry more stuff than I can fit in there. I'm sick of borrowing Andrew's crusty MEC backpack that he's had for over 15 years. It has held up very well, but it's kind of gross and does not suit me at all.

I think I'll get a Baggu one for now (they are such a good price!) and keep an eye out for something special.

I will look for an army surplus store. Thanks for the tip Johanna!

  9. whoa those baggu "pack-sacks" (thunderbayspeak) are great. perfect and light-wight for biking with a few key picnic items.

carly, you should help me pick out a colour.

  10. yay pack-sacks!
It's so hard to pick a colour! I'm leaning towards the 'duffel' colour for myself (the olivey green). I can see you rocking the blue or the nutmeg - or any of them really. Speaking of picnics, we have to have a picnic when we're in montreal and get mom and dad to drink beer in the park out of paper bags again!

  11. RE: picnicking - totally. that was utterly classic last time.

I'm leaning towards the nutmeg actually.
